Gas stove and camping

Gas stove and camping - 04/13/17 06:09 PM

Hi all,

We will visit Grand Canyon this summer and will do tent camping there.
To cook we will use a gaz canister stove but we aren't sure where to keep it while we hike in the park.

We called MSR and they say it's definitely too hot in the car.
Where would you keep it?

Would you try to put it somewhere on the campsite, try to burry it, or would you keep it with us in our bagpack while we hike?

Thanks a lot for your hints!

If you are camping on the south rim of The Grand Canyon the altitude is about 7000' while the north rim is closer to 8000'. Summer high temperatures in northern Arizona at these altitudes are not likely to exceed 80 degrees. Car interiors can certainly be hotter than this, though, if they are parked in the sun. I have repeatedly left gas canisters in my car while parked on the south rim with no problems but I make a point of parking in mid-day shade. Personally, I don't worry too much about storing gas cartridges under these conditions but my experience is anecdotal so take it with a grain of salt. It would certainly be easy enough to hide the canister(s) in a shady place outside of the car or to decide to use a white gas stove instead of using compressed gas.

Put it in the car trunk, inside a cooler, with some ice. Same place you keep your food that you want to keep cool. Just wipe the dirt of the canister.

I would feel completely confident sitting it on the floor boards, inside of the car. There's a big temp. difference down there.

Thanks a lot for all your replies.
I feel much more confident to keep the stove in the car now.

I will do as you said: try to park the car under shady place (if possible), and put the stove in the trunk, in some cooling bag with ice.

Are you talking about using one of the Camping Gaz stoves, the ones where you can't separate the canister from the stove until it's empty? If so, wherever you put it, ensure it won't move or get jostled and inadvertently turn on the gas.

overthinking, i would just stash the gas in the bushes in the shade. don't forget them on your way out. Safer than leaving in car. If you ULTRA paranoid, bring a little shovel and bury them.
