Foreign backpacking?

What are some tips for someone (me) planning on backpacking in a foreign country (i.e. India, Australia, parts of Europe and other parts of Asia)? Like, footwear to take, cooking stuff or not, type of bag, types of clothes?

I haven't backpacked outside California, let alone the US..
