Edward Abbey - 07/02/06 08:21 AM
Hello all,
Im currently reading Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey. I like it a lot to say the least. I also read "Beyond the Wall" and enjoyed that thoroughly.
Can anyone recommend any other books written by Abbey?
I know I could read the reviews on Amazon.com but I like the feedback on here much more.

What, you haven't read The Monkey Wrench Gang? I would imaging it's a little dated now, but it's great fun fiction. If you've ever seen a dam that shouldn't be there, you'll have an appreciation for this tale.
Any of the essay collections are good reading:
Down the River
The Journey Home
come to mind.

You have to read Monkey Wrench Gang before Hayduke or it does not make sense.

I thought Hayduke Lives was absolutley awful. The only way it got publsihed was that is was a sequel, and I think it was published posthumouly. It was such a dissapointment!!

Well, hmmm, The Monkey Wrench Gang was hardly a deathless piece of art, either. It mostly works because of the infectious gusto Abbey brought to the subject of eco-sabotage, not because the characters, plot, or style are outstanding.

You are probably right about that! It's been years since I actually read it, and that was in my activist phase. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

"The Brave Cowboy" (Abbey's first), "Good News", and "Black Sun" are all good. His journals, "Memoirs of a Barbarian" (or something like that) are a good read, too.
