Zip up that tent! Nature on the prowl - 08/05/08 12:02 PM

Holy moly:

The Associated Press

IDLEDALE, Colo. — A mountain lion has snatched a Labrador retriever from a bedroom in the foothills southwest of Denver, and the dog's dead body was found nearby.

State wildlife managers say the lion entered the bedroom early Monday through a door the owners left open, probably to cool the house. The door did not have a screen.

It's not clear whether the owners were in the room at the time.

State Division of Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill says officers are hunting for the mountain lion and have set a trap.

Idledale is about 14 miles southwest of Denver.

Did you see the black bear that interrupted the golf tournament in Colorado last week? I find it amusing how undaunted the golfers are in the picture.

That's 'cause they know the bear will only go after the guys in the tents!

I would hate to think of what a bear would do to me while sleeping in my hammock.
I can imagine swinging back and forth and being batted with big clawed bear feet. Then being ripped down and mauled. Maybe I should hang about 12 feet off the ground.

Aww come on, you don't have real bears down thar.. just them black things..

I call my big yellow hammock a grizzly burrito

But in all seriousness, I've had bears go through my camp. they pretty much ignore my hammock. My problem with critters in camp has always been with things like porcupines and marmots that will bold as brass come in and shred anything you've sweated on they are
so salt crazy. I feel much more "secure" at night with everything hung off the ground, including me. I don't lose a wink of sleep over bears.

The mountain lion cached the dog and when it came back the DOW killed it. Not a good ending for man or beast.

Two mountain lions have been killed here in Durango lately for attacking pets in town.

If anything, the details make it even more chilling (shudder). That wasn't quite like a racoon waddling into the kitchen through an open window.

Yeah, just black ones around here and I haven't even seen one yet, except on TV They had the thing on the run. My hammock is gray. I wanted to be stealthy but my fly is wally world cheap nylon green. You can see it thru thick forest. I always sleep like a baby anyway. I think the sutle gastric noises and fumes should keep them away. It'sjust my way of marking my teritory as any animal would do.

Real good watch dogs. The story states that their are three to seven thousand Mt.lions. in that area. Sounds like it's time to go Mt. lion hunting. or are they endangered. It would be kinda like fishing, using bait and all.
