Do plastic soda bottles work as a container for denatured alcohol?

Yes - as long as you use pop bottle caps and not the caps from drinking water bottles. Pop bottle caps have the better seals needed for alcohol. However the smaller drinking water bottles can be a handier size for alcohol. Check to make sure a pop bottle cap will make a good seal on whatever bottle you use; some bottles accept only shallow caps. BE SURE to label the bottle obviously to avoid dangerous mistakes.

Very logical reply Mr. Spock. Water bottles are kinda flimsey but good for water. I use a used whiskey flask. The kind that good whiskey comes in I deduct that if the flask is good enough to protect precious libation it should serve as equal protection for your fuel It would be a catastropic failure if either were damaged and be a detrament to the Enterprise and crew to complete the mission. BTW WHO BROUGHT THE TRIBBLE ON BOARD ANYWAY????

I would think making a cork seal for the inner side of the cap would also work. They sell cork gasket material at auto shops and other places. I saw some in the dollar store the other day.

I've yet to find a 'plastic' bottle that doesn't work...pop bottles included. I've tried several different bottles and have not yet found a problem with interaction between the alky and the plastic. To me, then, the important factors are strength and leak proof.

My favorites are recylced contact lens bottles. They run from 1oz to 12oz, are near indestructible and, have fine nozzle tips which are great for measuring the fuel or pouring it straight into the stove.

I have successfully used Gatorade Sports bottles with the "water bottle" spout. I may add a gasket as suggested, but leaking has not been a problem in the past.
