need good tarp - 07/13/08 12:17 PM
I looking for a good tarp to use with my bivy, I know a lot of people here use that combination, I want something thats quick and easy to setup, and weighs under a pound so weight is not such an issue, I've never used a tarp and need some advice thanks. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Here's a good one:
http://www.rei.com/product/721102Lots of grommets to set it up and it weighs only 14 ounces and is large at 8 by 10 feet. Of course, a little expensive at $89.
I have a Golite 8x10 tarp, unfortunately it isn't made by them anymore.

I guess you're looking for a flat, rectangular tarp? Campmore generally has good prices. Something in Silnylon would be the lightest. I'd shoot for about ten by ten feet, though obviously that's not a rectangle.
Or are you considering something else?
As a couple, we have a 10' x 12' Campmor Silnylon tarp, but they come in 6' x 8' and 8' x 10'. The 8' x 10' is $65 US and weights 13 oz.

I think the campmor tarp and the equinox tarp from REI that other posters have mentioned are actually the same tarp. Campmor just sells it for cheaper.
I use that tarp and it's a good tarp at a good price. There are better tarps out there for some purposes but this is a good all-around tarp.

I would look for a tarp that has tabs as opposed to grommets as tabs are generally stronger. I have a
Jacks-R-Better tarp, which you may consider, but there are plenty out there. I like using the Flying Diamond set-up.
