Montbell Super Stretch Down Hugger

I'm interested in learning how those sleeping bags work as quilt. I'm contemplating purchasing the #5 or #7 for summer camping and I'm worrying more about sleeping too warm and pushing the bag to its lower comfort temperature threshold. I sleep on my stomach and on the side.

Hopefully someone has experience to share.

I had a #3 - yes, with the full zip, one could use it as a quilt-type cover. I would not worry about sleeping too warm. Although I liked the comfort of it (stretch baffles), some of it's baffles were lacking in down. I believe the temp ratings are pretty accurate assuming one is zipped up as the stretch baffles move with your body and trap in a lot of heat. However, I also believe that if the stretch baffles were not present, the bags would not be as efficient because of the lack of down fill weight. So...the bag(s) may be considerably cooler if used as a quilt but ideal for summer use. I hope that makes sense.

If you want a quilt, consider buying one. www.jacksrbetter.com has several nice choices. I like the ones with the head hole since they can be worn as in-camp insulation too.

I've got an older model #5 and find it's quite short of the claimed temperature range--their high (comfort) range rating should really be the lower (survival) range number. It's the only bag I've owned that fails to approach the spec'd temperature. The current versions seem better spec'd, so will hopefully perform better than mine.

The MontBell US site seems to have dispensed with their two-temperature rating system, which is probably a good thing. The old system was confusing, to say the least.
