Cheap lightweight backpacking rod case?

Cheap lightweight backpacking rod case? - 06/12/08 01:11 PM

I'm looking for some ideas. I tried 2" black pvc pipe, even drilled it full of holes, plenty strong but just too heavy. I need something to protect my 2 piece, 5'6" ultra-light trout rod. I appreciate the cloudburst of ideas that I know is comming. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Home Depot had schedule 20 up to 1". 2" is the right size to clear the ferrules on my spinning rod.

Good idea though, I'll see if Lowes has 2" sc 20.

I can tell you that black pvc (whatever the schedule is) is much lighter than white schedule 40 water pipe.

Clear florecent light tubes work great. Home Depot. Cap it with pvc caps.
Lighter than pvc pipe.

Dla,

Have you looked at Map cases at the stationary stores. Some are light plastic tubes, also Core-plex rolled up then duct tape together and add caps( same material as the white Post Office / Office mail binds).

I was going to suggest that, but most spinning rods need something bigger.

I have used the plastic tubes that long strands of jerky/candy come in. I get them from the local mom/pop shops, 7-11, etc. Frequently I get them for free, never paid more than a buck for them. Clean them out and they're ready to go.

BPL has a thread on this - the best suggestions I saw were plastic tubes for fluorescent lights

I have a 3 pcs 9' 5wt flyrod and although it did hang up several times on tree limbs, the flouresent light tube did protect it from breaking.

Thanks folks. I finally got down to Home Depot and picked up a couple 4' light tube covers. They are sooo much lighter than the drilled black 2" black pvc I was using. A 4' tube cover weighs 4oz. My pvc creation weighed 1.5 lbs.

The only end caps available were the "innies". No luck finding the "outties" I had seen on the web.

Now I need to come up with a lightweight lure box. I was thinking of something with styrofoam for the hooks and a quart freezer bag for the container.
