Tilley hat question - 05/27/08 01:26 PM

I saw a post on another board about a Ltm6 tilley hat. I did some research and this appears to be pretty good hat. It is on ebay for 24.00
Does anyone have experience with this model of Tilley Hat. I've never owned a tilley before, but am interested and might bid on it.
It says 7 3/8 size - I know nothing of hat sizes, but if this is in inches then the guy must be a pinhead. (no offense intended)
Assuming that I am wrong and that if someone had a 7 3/8" circumference head that their hats would be custom made and most likely not for sale - how do I measure my big ole fat mellon to see what size it is?

My size is between a 7 1/4 and 7 1/2. I have a fairly small head (despite what my wife says). I don't know how they measure it, but my bet is that you are bigger than 7 1/2.

You could always try this site. Make sure the measurement is a relaxed one, not tight.

Better yet, here's their sizing guide:

Hat size is roughly equivalent to the diameter of your head, not the circumference.

circumference = pi x diameter (or 2 x pi x radius):
So, a hat size of 7 3/8, translates into a circumference of ~23.17 inches.

Do a google search on "hat size" and you will see that it works out pretty close to the above calculations. Just like clothing sizes, not all manufacturers stick to the same guidelines, so it's best to check the manufacturer's sizing charts.

Thanks dkr - I used the Tilley website instructions, duh. Really - I am normally sharper than that. I also noticed that Gander Mountain carries them so I went there and tried some on. It is a sweet hat. Not sure how cool it would actually be.

The hat I wear now is a Filson with a leather head band. That sounds uncomfortable I know. You would be surprised at how very well the leather headband works. It does not absorb sweat and my head never seems to drip much sweat when I am wearing it. Poor old thing - it has no shape and is very worn and stained. Its been through the washer a hundred times. The dog peed on it once. (Do not get in his line of fire!) It has been used wipe up just about everything. Crushed and shoved in the pack. It has swatted flies and covered my head for almost 10 years. I might put it on gear swap so keep your eyes open - it will be priced to move.

I think I will try the Tilley LTM6. It appears to be pretty solid- and stylish.

I have a Tilley, not sure what model, maybe a T3. Got it at A16, a local outdoor store-a smaller version of REI. Speaking of which, the Tilley site shows that REI carries them, but $24 for a Tilley is a really good price. Mine was $50 or so on sale. The one you are looking at lists for $72.
