Attaching pillow to pad

I'd like my pillow to stay put at night. I use a Torsolite pad by BMW, ontop of a 1/4" Thinlite pad from GG.

I'd like to attach it to the thinlite, but I can't think of how.

What kind of pillow do you use?

In my case, I use a nylon inflatable pillow. I tape two strips of velcro onto my pillow and two corresponding stips onto the pad itself -- securing the strips with packaging tape -- and that works very well for me.

If you are shopping for pillow and pad, then consider MontBell's system -- which toggles everything together!

I have the same problem. I think the solution for me is the Montbell Pilllow . They don't come cheap but they get excellent reviews.

I think the toggle idea could improvised and adapted to other pillows.

I've seen the Montbell system, but I've heard of delamination problems with the pad.

I think velcro might be the ticket. Just how to attach it to the thinlite. What type of glue would work best to attach velcro to foam?

If I was using thicker foam I would cut an insert slit in the end to get greater surface area on the velcro. But with the 1/4" I'm using, that really isn't an option.

I recently purchased a Thermorest Prolite 4 and their camp chair that is actually a sleeve. At the top end of the sleeve is a place for your pillow or you can stuff it with clothes. I like it.

I made a nylon sleeve with pillow/stuffed clothes pocket, it adds a little weight, but protects the pad, when sleeping on and also rolling and carrying it (as support inside my frameless pack) This sleeve can be used with different pads (foam or self inflatable). I also sew on it velcro tabs to keep my quilt in place. Been using it for may be 12 years...

Ok, this post keyed me into what I need to make. A sleeve of sorts, yes. But one that relies on body weight to hold it in place. Not a sleeve that wraps around the entire pad, but one that I will keep in place by laying on it.

Course, this assumes that that wasn't what was mentioned already. I don't think it was.

I will make something to this effect soon and test it out.

I attach my stuffsack/pillow with velcro. Sewn to the stuffscak - actually I have short tabs with velcro on them - and glued to the pad ( thermarest) I used Seamgrip to glue to the thermarest, it might stick to the foam as well - give it a try.

One feature I like about my Big Agnes sleeping bag is that it has a pocket sewn into it for a pillow. You can either stuff it with clothes or put a small pillow in it. It took me a few nights to figure out the best way to use it was to put it underneath the pad as opposed to inside the bag or between the bag and pad.

I think Jim solved the problem. If you keep the pillow duct taped to your head, then you don't have to pack it in your pack. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Hideaki's "toggle" attatchment is BRILLIANT! ABSOLUTLY BRILLIANT! (I feel the strange need for a Guiness Stout just now.)

But I'd reinforce my RidgeRest corners with Gorilla Duct Tape before melting the holes for the toggles. On a Thermarest I will sew cord loops on the top corners for the toggles and I'm upgrading my medium stuff sack with a side covering of thin fleece and a tethered toggle at each end corner. Ahhhh, sweet dreams at last.

How about using the "toggle system" for attatching a closed cell foam sit pad on the end of a 3/4 length mattress? Hmmmm, now I won't have to keep re-glueing my Velcro on my 3/4 winter Thermarest for that purpose.

I carry a pillow. A small one, but I CARRY A PILLOW when backpacking. Some people along the trail make fun of my little pillow. I like my pillow, and I don't mind hauling her around all day just to be able to sleep with her every night (stop snickering) ! I sewed a small, thin length of elastic cord to both ends of my pillow and left enough slack that the cord, with pillow attached, will reach around my Therm-a-rest mattress snuggly. The cord must not be so tight as to cause the mattress to fold up over your face while sleeping and smother you! After my wife sewed the cord on for me the first time, I resewed the cord to the pillow myself to avoid this very thing from happening again. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> This (now correct) configuration allows me to slide my arm under the pillow while sleeping or flip the pillow over to a cool side if needed. I can shift the pillow left to right or visa versa, or up and down, and it still stays attached to the mattress.

The trick is to get the elastic band ( or bungee cord ) just the right tension, so the pillow can be moved around for comfort adjustment, but it won't slide down or off the mattress as a non tethered pillow will.

Lay the pillow in the center of the mattress, pinch the elastic cord to one end of the pillow (or sew it on), pull the cord under the mattress and up over the other side and see where you need to cut and sew the other end of the cord to the pillow. If the mattress folds up too much along the edges, let out more cord before sewing it on the pillow. The thin elastic cord folds (compresses) right up with the pillow, and if you fold it right you can secure the pillow in a compressed size by using the same elastic cord. I can post a picture of my pillow (with a pillow case) if needed. Brum

Brum, you need to try a neck brace, those things that people with a broken neck wear to keep their head up. You can then sit up in church, and sleep without bobbing your head. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
