What's up with Orikaso?

What's up with Orikaso? - 12/15/09 05:27 PM

We have been trying to get the Orikaso bowls (origami-style fold up). We want just the bowls. Plates aren't that useful to us and the cups are kinda stupid.

Looking around, it seems that there has been some change/buyout with Orikaso now owned or produced by a British firm. Companies (like REI) that used to carry it don't seem to any more. And it seems that only the sets are available -- although many places that claim to carry them list the items as "out of stock".

Anyone know what's going on?

I have seen a similar folding plate in town from another brand.
Possibly this one :

A quick search on the net seem to show that as a set only..
No idea of what is happening with Orikaso, still available here in Australia.

Found these at REI. Same thing except they have snaps.

Apparently the link wont work. Just go to REI.com and type in Fozzils.

Fozzils came on the market a couple years after Orikaso - but IMO are better due to the snaps. They hold together better.

As for Orikaso if I remember right they were always based out of the UK.....could well be that last year with high gas prices it didn't make $$ to import them? Fozzils come in from China (we carried Fozzils in our store when they first came out and while the corporate office was in Seattle, Wa they were directly shipped from China - I actually sent our wholesale payments to China!) This would be much cheaper for REI, being based in Seattle and of which is one of the main West Coast ports....

Yeah, I really don't like the snaps. Orikaso had some snaps originally and I didn't like them. The bowls didn't have snaps and now their plates don't, either. Snaps can fail (voice of experience) but if the folds are done correctly it can't fail.

But I also liked the bowls just because they were multi use and were all I needed.

I did find someone that still handles Orikaso (or at least claims to -- haven't put an order in yet).

The snaps on the Fozzils were miles better. I have one set (bowl and plate) that has been snapped, used and unsnapped at least 200 times for work related purposes and it still looks as-new. Not once has any of the snaps failed - even fully loaded with food.

When Orikaso changed to tabs it bothered me - to me, tabs have a way higher rate of failure (especially if put in too quickly and the bowl isn't tight enough). But that is me.

I was going to link to Sarbar's site for her closeout sale on the Fozzil sets, but I see they're already gone. I wasn't very impressed with the spoon or the cup, but the bowl is what I really wanted.

I needed a different food and water bowl for my dog. The folding nylon bowl I've used for--wow, 7 years now!--tends to collapse at the wrong moment (preferably when I pour in water that Hysson has carried most of the day and there are no new water sources for miles). It's hard for Hysson to get all his food out of it and it's very difficult to clean up after his meal (meaning it has to go in the Ursack after dinner, so Hysson can't get his usual bedtime drink). The kibble crumbs stick to it and Hysson can't lick them off.

The Fozzil bowl cleans up like a dream! It passed the Hysson dinner test with flying colors! In fact, he seemed quite excited about the new bowl even before I put food in it.

It also weighs 0.2 oz. less than the folding nylon bowl (when the latter is dry, which it usually isn't on a backpack).

I got the idea from Bigfoot's bowl for his dog Bennie. I think his may be one of the Orikaso bowls with snaps, though.

Mouse
So you're saying that you only use the silicon bowl for your dog? Or do you share it with him? smile I mean hes a very nice doggy and people get very close their dogs. I don't worry about where my dogs mouth has been but maybe I should. crazy If I washed it out I'd have no problem sharing with her, she has learned to drink from a water bottle pretty good. Anyway my dog weighs 1/3 as much as I do and drinks twice as much water. I don't worry so much about my own water needs, I tend to think "Oh I better take a bottle of water for the dog".
Personally I eat of my Ti pan, why carry a bowl or plate?

I agree the orikaso folds do not work well at all. I have a couple plates and they do not hold. I like the idea of the snaps but have not had the chance to use any of the fozzils stuff yet.

The Fozzil bowl is polypropylene - so think food grade plastic, thin. Not like silicone that is heavier and thicker.

The Fozzil bowl is specifically for Hysson. I eat out of a freezer bag and drink tea out of my cooking pot (no dishes to wash!). I love my dog but not enough to share his bowl!

It isn't silicone but food-grade plastic, as Sarbar mentioned.

I have looked at the foldable and collapsable bowls and plates. I'm stickin with a light solid plastic bowl. You never know, I might have to use it for a padle or a hat or something.LOL eek Plus the fact that solid is easier to clean

I would argue that the folding stuff is easier to clean. Just unfold/unsnap and wipe clean. Done. Slide it into your pack and you are off and running.

Definitely. There is nothing easier to clean and pack. And, you can just use them unfolded as a work/food-prep surface.

Just found them in stock at Austin Kayak. They had over 30 of both orange and green. I got 5 of each but 4 will go for a Christmas present. I already have 6 blue bowls and 1 blue plate. Why they have an unlimited supply and REI and the other biggies seem to be out or not carry them is perplexing.

The bowls are absolutely reliable to hold liquids. They will never come apart. The plates I don't find quite so trustworthy. I'd be inclined to use snaps for the plates if I had anything liquid.

The mugs work but just are too much hassle IMO.
