Alps backpacks?

Alps backpacks? - 09/11/09 02:30 PM

Anyone ever use Alps Mountaineering Backpacks? I know they aren't on the official list of Lightweight or Ultralight but they are a heck of alot lighter than the trunk full of gear I usually haul. I have questions specifically about the Orizaba. Looks to be about the same size as the REI Flash 65. That's probably an unfair comparison. The Orizaba looks like a good place to start from. Plenty pockets, adjustable, daisy chain down the front. If you've used their gear I'd be interested in hearing about it.

I'm trying to lighten up but not ultralight or gram weenie at all. Just thoughtful and planning.

Thanks,
John

I have a Cascades (about 4200 c.i.) pack that I used before starting the lightweight/UL thing. It was a heavy pack (around 5.5-6 pounds I want to say?), but it fit me well. I'd guess that for the heavier packs with heavier loads, fit and proper load transfer becomes increasingly important, so I don't know what to tell you besides getting your hands on one and trying it out with your typical load-out.
