Since none of the women I've ever hiked with wore skirts, I think I'll pass.

They don't match my color palette.

Reminds me of the time I was hiking in the Never Summer Area of Colorado and down the trail came a male backpacker with his girlfriend. She was wear one of those 80's flaired miniskirts. I can't imagine it being modest on any of the steep trails <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />, keeping the bugs off, keeping her legs and bottom warm or being practical except for being cool.

I saw the skirt in the recent Montbell catalog, and I can see how it might be useful. I have a hard time keeping my butt and hips warm in the cold. And it's easy to take off when you warm up, unlike layers worn underneath pants.

I've met a good number of (scottish I suppose) hikers in traditional or plain kilt; found that alright (nice swinging of kilt, <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />, and lovely calves too <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />)

But THAT down, hem, jacket?

Perhaps that wee short thing could pass for a kilt in the united states, but those of us proper subjects of her majesty of typical male proportions know a proper kilt needs a lower hemline to make sure mister happy doesn't wave to the crowd from underneath.. I find it pretty amusing that "normal straight males" have so much fear of loosing their group identity as a "manly man" by wearing something not considered manly by - whom? Your grandma? (no offense grandmas) Lets say you spend all day slogging a canyon hunting, kill a deer gut it, carry out a piece and go back for another while covered with dried blood, fight a bear for the second half, spend a night out in the cold lost but manage a self rescue. Still you couldn't be seen hiking in a skirt because someone else woosier than you might call you a sissy for breaking the male clothing code. I'm very tempted to start hiking in a cargo skirt next season (with my .44 on a web belt) just because I like to make people look at their prejudices. Yet men have been wearing the same Levis and shirts for hundreds of years. The Scott's and Romans knew how to wear a skirt. Go ahead - call a bunch of Roman soldiers femme for wearing their battle kilts - ha ha - how bout a sword through yer heart smart Alec?

If there was a functional reason for wearing a skirt, I might consider it. But I only see disadvantages and no advantages.

how about chaffing - a common complaint of long distance hikers, and sweating between the legs while hiking in hot weather. I have worked as a brasero in the vineyards in Napa where we only wore loose cutoffs - unzipped, so the wind could blow through more easily. Climbing over rocks, a skirt would bind less. BUT I'll bet there are skirt wearers in this group who cold tell us a thing or two - come on Daisy or someone, help me out here. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Frankly I can also see where nude hiking or climbing might be best for certain weather conditions. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> A true purest has to climb nude to meet the rock on its own terms, but I preffer the addition of climbing shoes. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

I've never had much trouble with chafing. Can't say I've ever had trouble with sweat when I'm wearing running shorts, either.

A good fitting pair of shorts doesn't bind. Nor does one made with sufficient stretch.

I think our pints are the same size but I went to the outdoor store the other day and bought a pair of hiking socks I picked out from the discount bin and when I got em home I discovered that they were XL I thought I was a L. So I put em on and they fit. You know what they say about big feet. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

??? a cargo shirt sounds manly. What's a cargo shirt? You have to start a fashion trend not be a follower. Remember when the little kid rappers were wearing their oversized jeans backwards. Now look at all the kids wearing jeans that the crotch is almost dragging the ground. I'm not saying that is a good look but someone started a trend now it's sold in walmart. I keep kidding my daughter about making her shoes and fashion accessories from duct tape. Well with the economy it may come to that.

I can definately see places it would be ok. - just wear a sporrin and call it a kilt if you don't feel manly.

Of course there are mosquitos.. a problem when wearing a kilt traditionally..

Cannot help you out on this one! I am old enough to have had to wear dresses and skirts all through school and once in college, I hardly ever wore a dress on again! I prefer loose pants to a skirt any day. I do not even wear shorts that much because bugs swarm me all the time. However, if you want to wear a skirt, I would not consider it any reflection on your manliness.

I can see where it would be cool and airish but I like the addition of clothing to:
1. Help with slight abrasions <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />
2. Wick and control moisture <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
3. Keep you warm <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
4. Keep you dry <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
5. Look very stylish, <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Making my life a little better knowing that I won't be strutting down a crooked trail when around the corner comes a group of Girl Scouts. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> But as they wonder by they will gaze upon "Wilson", (the ball from the movie Castaway) ,painted on my nice round belly. I guess if even the girls don't think skirts have a place hiking or climbing, then its not worth pursuing. I just have to think of Fred Flintstone and wonder if the fur toga was as good as people think. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

You have to hang out with a very select crowd in order for bagpipes to make you more popular.

If a fur toga is all you got then who cares what people think. You won't have a fashion choice anyway. Except maybe what animal it was.

I always wear shorts. Different kinds, (heavy vs light, short vs long,) for different seasons, but even here in Maine, I pretty much live in shorts year round. And shorter than most men nowadays will tolerate. I think I carry it off rather well.

If I ever get back into serious winter hiking or mountaineering, I might just take another look at this. But for almost everything I do, shorts rule, and no matter what others think. Not a consideration. The only consideration should be the danger of exposure in our severe cold spells.
