Replacement for Mountainsmith Ghost

Replacement for Mountainsmith Ghost - 10/09/08 10:56 AM

I've had a Ghost for years, and loved it. Recently, it was stolen and I'm faced with replacing it. I love the size, weight, etc. Of the Ghost. Unfortunately, again, it's no longer manufactured. Any suggestions for a replacement?

TLB member paulbrown137 has one posted on the buy/sell forum, maybe he still has it. Here's a link to his post Mountainsmith Ghost

Good to see you back on the forum again, it's been a long time since you posted. Thought maybe you'd left us.

The ULA Circuit might be the Ghost replacement you are looking for. Both packs feature Delrin suspension hoops and both are great for middle-range gear weight. As for volume, I believe the pack bags are comparable in size; the Circuit's greater overall volume results from its voluminous mesh pockets.

While I don't have any direct experience with the ULA pack, I do have a hiker friend who owns both Circuit and Ghost and love them both.

But if panel loading is the feature you are looking for, then the Golite Litespeed is worth a look.

I have one that has never been used that I might be willing to sell for a reasonable price (size medium, with the belt extension). I've been looking for an excuse to buy an ULA Circuit, selling the Ghost would be the push I need...

That's the older model, there were issues with the stays tearing out. Mine is the olive colored one.

If you want a panel loader, the new Six Moon Designs Traveler might be the one for you. Get the optional stays because the load lifters don't work without it, and with the stays it works great up to 35-37 lbs. You can always remove the stays for really light loads. I have their Comet pack and absolutely love it. If I were getting a new pack, though, I'd go for the Traveler.

I'll agree with some of the other posters and say to check out ULA's packs. My Ghost is about to bite the dust, and the ULA Catalyst sounds pretty similar by its descriptions. I liked the Ghost because it could hold a bear canister inside if I had to pack one, and so can the Catalyst.

Thanks everyone for your help. I haven't looked at the ULA packs in a while. I'll have to take a looksee.

ULA Circuit looks a lot like a Gossamer Gear Mariposa plus.

I figured I'd resurrect this thread to chat up my new purchase. I did exactly what the thread title says, I replaced my Mountainsmith Ghost (sold it to a lucky member here). I'm thinking if I get laid off, I'm going to sell my house (or let the bank assume ownership) and hit the trail.

My new pack is the ULA Circuit, and it just arrived today. So far, I'm really impressed with it. Now I'm geeked to get out on the trail.

Congrats on the new pack!

I'm psyched to hit the trail, too. Is winter over yet?
