Sewing Machine Value - 06/20/08 08:34 AM

Let me start by saying I know nothing about sewing machines.

We may be selling my mother's machine, it's a White 5839. I'm curious about its approximate value.

Paddy,

Refer to these links and it may help in finding out the cost

My wife and I just have 2 plain singers machines w/ 30-40 type of stitches
one cost $180( 2001) and the portable was $75 ( 2 months ago on sale).

Good luck on this.

For the most part, the selling price for used sewing machines is low. There are so many inexpensive imports now. You can check eBay for similar machines. Is there anything collectible about the machine you are offering?

Go here (above link) and ask about blue book value.

Examples.......

Question Quantum XL100
I have a Singer Quantum XL 100 and a friend wants to buy it and I don't know what it is worth. I don't want to over charge and it is not worth anything to me sitting in the closet.

IT is in great shape.Where can I go to find the value?
Thanks Ann

Answer Dear Ann,

According to the sewing machine blue book, your machine is worth $775.00. That is of course, depending on the condition of the machine and is wholesale cost.

If it's an old sewing machine, I say keep it. They don't make em like that anymore.

Recently, I was searching for the value of a couple of older machines that I have. One is a portable that is worth 20 buck maybe. The other is a singer treadle machine that was my grandmothers. In the thirties my grandfather converteded it to us an electric motor. Basicly it's only worth sentimental value. My problem is I have a garage full of stuff that is only worth sentimental value. What to do?

One option is to do like many on eBay. Promote the heck out of the machine, calling it "Heavy Duty", "Sews Leather" , "Goes Right Through Jean Materials". Don't forget that there is "Rare and Hard to Get" "All Metal Machine".......

Often there will be a buyer who won't know the value because it is hard to get much of the data for the nearly thousands of different machine makers and models out there.

A second thing is to donate them to GoodWill or Salvation Army or other charity thrift shop. Then you can take a write off on taxes, if you itemize and if you qualify for the charity tax write off.

A third is to try Craigs List for your neck of the woods, if there is one. Try www.craigslist.org ..

Maybe you can find a "sentimental collector" who will take them off of your hands.

If they are good sewers, you might let them go for not much more than shipping on one of the MYOG oriented web sites.

I currently have five machines, and if you have a Singer 401A or a Singer 500, I would be interested. But nothing else, except maybe a Pfaff 230, 332, 260 or 360.........

I think I'd rather have one of those old singer treadle machines than anything. I've been keeping my eye out for one in good shape. I want it to sew with!
