WM Item Number for Silnylon?

WM Item Number for Silnylon? - 04/08/15 11:48 AM

I've heard about people finding silnylon very inexpensively in the bin at Walmart, but I've never seen it. However, I know a manager who may be able to order it... if I can track down the item number on the sticker. Has anyone seen it in their area? I prefer gray, blue, olive, and other earthy/drab colors, in that order. No camo. though. I don't like camo. If you find some, and you're sure it's sil, please jot down the item number for me. Thanks! smile

My experience is that it is not great silnylon and usually the bolts are mis-labeled.

Really? What about this uncoated ripstop? I was looking at the uncalendared version, specifically the tan. The website says "Lower thread count than our standard 1.1oz Ripstop Nylon. Fine for a double layer ultralight hammock, but a bit risky for a single layer hammock." I want it for tarp, though, not a hammock. I figure as cheap as it is, it'd be worth it to sil treat it at home and still come out way ahead. But would it be strong enough to stand up to use as a tarp?

When I posted a link to that video yesterday, what I was really looking for was this. I just couldn't remember where I'd seen it.

With the lower thread count, I would guess that it would be difficult siliconizing it yourself. Looks like he only has the red, blue and yellow. The red is the cheapest at $2.85 a yard. Compare that with $5.95 a yard for silnylon. Now factor in the tube of silicon, the big container of mineral spirits, and any other equipment you need to siliconize it.

That is great stuff for a synthetic quilt though!

I'd wait for the tan to come back in stock - $1.95/yd. And the cost of the silicone and mineral spirits, according to this guy is just a hair over $5. If the thread count's too low though, that's another matter. frown

My guess is the low thread count will make it not work as well. If it isn't down proof to begin with, it probably won't seal as well. You will also pay more than $5 to seal it, at least $10-15. Of course, you can always try it out and tell us how it went. I could be wrong. smile

Not WalMart but not a bad deal. I don't think this was listed before.

I just bought a bunch of silpoly from ripstop by the roll. I plan to make a tarp.

Hey FinallyME, or anyone really, I just have one more question. What about this fabled "$1 ripstop"? Have you ever seen that in the stores? And, if so, is it quality? And if so if so, will you keep an eye open for a item #?

Otherwise, I'll wait for seven yards of the $1.95 fabric to become available for a hammock, and play around with the scraps to see how well it can be silicone treated.

Failing that, I'll just have to save up my money a bit longer. Thanks in advance.

ETA: And, I just wanted to say, I hope you post a build thread of your tarp - with pictures!

Re: WM Item Number for Silnylon? - 04/15/15 10:32 AM

several year ago, I found both breathable, uncoated ripstop and coated ripstop at Walmart for $1.50 a yard. I bought a whole bunch of it. I remember that the bolt was mis-labeled. It was too long ago to find an item number, even if it wasn't mis-labeled. I made a quilt and a hammock out of the breathable stuff. I still have the quilt, works great. The hammock broke eventually, with me in it frown . I made a tarp with the coated stuff....It eventually started leaking. I tried resealing it with not much luck. I finally decided to just buy the good stuff. That is where I am right now. I bought some silpoly from ripstop by the roll. Yesterday I started cutting it out. I need to hurry and sew it for this summer.

Ah, I see. Sorry it didn't work out for you, but I'm glad I can learn from your troubles.
