Tent Pole Project

I lost the poles to my Sierra Designs Meteor Light 2.
It takes two poles. One is straight. The other has two, circular junctions which are opposite ends of an "eye" shaped arrangement. Take a look:

Sierra Designs, and their parts supplier, American Recreational Products, both in Boulder, do not stock the patent-pending, eye-shaped pole. Apparently, they never did, leaving their customers at a loss.
I don't feel like shelling out another $200.00 for a replacement tent, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on imitating this unavailable pole. Thanks, Paul W.

Wow! What great timing. I woke up this morning thinking about where I could buy custom tent poles or at least the raw materials to make them and you've answered both of those questions for me.

I had contacted them earlier and they told me they could not help me in my search.
I'll see if I can find some pics of the REI Chrysalis, and see if, by chance, the poles are similar.

I swear I read, relatively recently, about a west coast firm--I think Vancouver, WA--that does custom and replacement tent poles. I won't have time to research it until January, but I will look for it then. I didn't pay a lot of attention at the time because my tents all use trekking poles for support.

OOPS, sorry, it turns out that it was Tent Pole Technologies. So forget that one!

Not alike. Chrysalis does not have the "eye" . I can only imagine that they cannot make a replica of your tent because they do not have the dimensions needed. If anyone else has the tent, perhaps they could provide dimensions of the parts plus photos of how it goes together, then you might approach them again.

If neither sierra designs nor tent pole tech. is able to help, you are probably out of luck. IF you had the dimensions for Sierra's proprietary tent pole attachment you could get it fabricated. Shapeways does 3d printing in metal for a reasonable price, but you would need a cad model. BY the time you get the weird things printed up and the poles from tent pole tech you might as well have bought a new tent.

The only other option I see is searching craiglist and ebay for a used version of your tent perhaps with the tent body damaged, so you can get the poles for cheap. Sounds like a long shot to me.

Do you still have the pole hubs? If so you can figure out the diameters of the poles needed and get some pole lengths and some shock cord and with a hacksaw and a file make your own set of poles, using the aluminum hub. If you don't have the hub I'm sure this piece of hardwear is available somewhere. It looks like a common hub.

Otherwise here's an idea---You could dispense with the hub and make two poles for the top wedge and have one pole go to the left and one go to the right (extra weight of course) and use the usual clips. You'd need to put a double grommet on the bottom tab webbing. Confusing I know---I need a piece of paper to make sense.

Go to a machine shop and make a couple little hubs and then measure and cut your own poles. Very easy with a saw and a file.

That's a nice looking tent. I'd rig something up to use it even if it was made out of an old coat hanger
