I know most of you will think it's a silly idea to backpack with a kayak, but I've been wanting to do it for a long time and my friend is really into the idea too. I've done the trail (I can't remember the names) but the one from Pfeiffer falls up to the hot springs (about 10 miles, I think it was pine ridge trail to sykes) a few times. I've always thought it would be cool to hike up, and kayak down. I never really gave it much thought because I didn't think any of my friends would want to do it and I didn't want to have to hike with the inflatable kayak. I just want to know if it's allowed to do so. Realistically we would probably hike 5 miles the first day to that first camp ground spot (once again I can't recall the name) and then do the remaining 5 the next day, camp again and then kayak out the third day. Mainly I just want to know if you can kayak the river down and if so, how rough is it, are there a lot of waterfalls we'd have to stop and hike around?
Thanks

Uh, no. The water is really, really low. You'll walk more than you float.

And if the river was running? That's white water kayaking, and not for anyone without experience.

I would never even consider for a second taking an inflatable on any white water anything - that sounds like suicidal thinking. You want something that survives contact with sharp points on rocks. The Sur would be a wild ride and you would have a heck of a time portaging around the hundreds of fallen trees making strainers in the river.
