I just got a great deal on a used bivy, but the pole/hoop is missing. Are they typically made of fiberglass, or something else? What diameter? My bivy is an Outdoor Research Helium, if that makes a difference. Thanks, Tom

OR's web site says they're made of Delrin (acetal thermoplastic) The common aluminum or fiberglass tent poles probably won't flex tight enough, but I'm not positive about that.

Years ago I made a bivy with a similar hoop arrangement. I used "music wire," sometimes called "piano wire," and joined the sections with metal tubing. I don't remember what diameter, but it was less than 1/8".

Many hardware stores and hobby shops sell it in 3ft. lengths.

You can probably order the original poles from Outdoor Research.

You can buy Delrin rod here:

You'd have to fashion some ferrules from metal tubing and epoxy them in place.

Thin high carbon wire is extremley hard and springy, that is good i can tell you. The sort of wire you cannot cut with pliars.

Some of the bivvys use aluminium with angles on,you can buy them on ebay.

I posted a question to the Outdoor Research web site, asking about the proper length and diameter for making a replacement pole for my bivy (I made it clear that I bought the bivy used). To my surprise, they immediately offered to ship me a new pole, free of charge. I just received the pole and it is great. Talk about excellent customer service!

Nice! We've had similar experiences with Neo_Air...
