The Tested-Gear-Weight Index !

NOTE:  If you don't have Java Script functionality turned on, this index won't
work for you -- that's okay, just scroll down the page.

For many outdoor gear manufacturers there is a significant disparity between the stated weight of their gear and its actual tested field weight (see articles published here in 1997 -- Ultralight vs. Lightweight and Beware Gear Marketing Tactics.

Regardless of their reasons for understating weight (and overstating utility), we need to respond by performing adequate gear research, in order to protect ourselves from being misled.

The intent of this page is to provide a mechanism for (1) reporting your findings -- i.e., stated gear weight vs. actual gear weight -- and (2) benefiting from the posts of others as you do your own gear research. Please take the time to share your research with the rest of us.

Reviewer = Richard Sullivan
Email = sullivan@horizon.bc.ca
Comments = Here's my results weighing a Kelty Flight 60
Regular on a very expensive scale. (Mettler PE3400)

Kelty Flight 60 (main bag)              650 g  22.9 oz
Kelty Flight 60 (compression straps)     69     2.4
Kelty Flight 60 (top pocket)            128     4.5
Kelty Flight 60 (shovel pouch)          118     4.2
Kelty Flight 60 (2 side pockets)        150     5.3
Kelty Flight 60 (lightbeam stays)       228     8.0
Kelty Flight 60 (framesheet)             88     3.1
Kelty Flight 60 (backpad)                90     3.2
Kelty Flight 60 (hipbelt)               342    12.1
Kelty Flight 60 (qty 10 gear loops)     174     6.1

The total weight for all components is 71.8 oz., which
is about 8% over the specified total of 66.6 oz. The
hipbelt weight specified by Kelty is the most understated
at 9.5 oz., versus 12.1 oz. actual. The main bag itself
is 0.9 oz. overspec and the stays are 1.1 oz. overspec.
Everything else is pretty close.

Comments = This product was 20% (!!!) overweight.
The Marmot warranty person said that he really
didn't care one bit, but at least they're giving
me a full refund. In my opinion Marmot is the
worst understater of product weights, with Sierra
Designs not far behind. They all babble on about
"averages", but isn't it amazing that nothing is
ever underweight!! Kudo's to companies like
Western Mountaineering that don't feel they have
to lie to us. That Marmot refund check is going
to buy me a really nice WM MityLite!

Product = Macpac Overture (2000)
Stated weight = 0.20 kg / 7.05 oz.
Tested weight = 0.35 kg / 12.5 oz.
Reviewer = Jan Unneberg
Comments = The Macpac Overture is a bag cover that
was significantly changed in the year 2000.
The HiLight fabric of the older version was replaced
with encapsulated Epic polyester. The weightof the
old HiLight model was listed as 0.28 kg / 9.88 oz.
It appears that Macpac made a mathmatical error when
calculating the weight of the new Overture. Instead
of adding 0.08 kg, Macpac subtracted 0.08 kg. causing
a major weight discrepancy.
