ADVERTISING

The Lightweight Backpacker website receives between 4 and 5 million hits each month and around 50 gigabytes of thru traffic. Most of that traffic occurs in the TLB Forums. As of 2/14/05, in order to offset increasing costs and attempt to generate additional revenue which will allow us to stay in business, we have opened up the TLB Forums for advertising. As always, though, the banners will be our creation and will be, in our opinion, unobtrusive and whose content, design, and product fits the overall scheme of TLB.

Most of the advertising will be directed to our retail-outlet partner, Backcountrygear.com. We will also consider additional offers from companies who wish to advertise, but their ads must have character, blend in well and generate adequate compensation. You can help by communicating this opportunity to manufacturers and retailers with whom you interact. Also, keep in mind, your direct financial support, via the means described below, will further enhance our ability to maintain this practice.

LIGHTWEIGHT GEAR STORE   

The gear store provides the bulk of our revenue. We do not yet carry inventory of our own but have partnerships with other online retailers (see list HERE), wherein we get a percentage of each sale.

Since approximately 1997, TLB has been a partner and mirror site of BackcountryGear.com, in providing a very robust selection of high quality, lightweight/ultralight outdoor equipment. Frequently, TLB requests Backcountry Gear to add inventory items based on our research and feedback from our members. We have a very good working relationship with BackcountryGear.com.

TLB earns revenue when you enter Backcountry Gear Ltd. (or any of the other retailers listed HERE) through a link at this website and subsequently make a purchase. For example, when you click on the "Lightweight Zone" link at the top of the page, it takes you to Backcountry Gear Ltd. If you then make a purchase there, TLB earns a commission on the total amount of your purchase.

Anytime that you are shopping in the Lightweight Gear Store, you will support TLB. Every item in the gear store is connected to one of our partners -- mainly Backcountry Gear. Other links are provided by clicking on the sponsors button at the top of this page. If you click on any of those links and make a purchase, TLB will earn a commission.

Here's a scenario that one person described as a potential way to make a donation. The price of an item listed in TLB's Gear Store is $300 but the person found the item on sale elsewhere and paid only $200. The person sends $30 to TLB which represents the 10% commission TLB would have earned had he bought the item at TLB's Gear Store. He still comes out with a $70 savings [$300-($200+$30)]. Another person sold used gear and donated the proceeds to TLB. By the way, these are actual examples :-).
