McHALE - NON-CM SIERRA ALPINE I (customized)

Received a McHale pack recently. A customized Non-CM Sierra Alpine I.

If you could only have one pack......

I had 2 or 3 inches taken out of the standard pack bag circumference, added height to the frame with a higher by-pass harness attachment-point effectively creating a more slender taller profile. In addition to producing a pack with a more easily achieved higher center of gravity, the extended height of the bag, plus velcro-roll-top closure in addition to 3 different lids (hip-sac lid w/pocket, summit flap w/pocket and summit flap w/o pocket), plus two different sizes of stays, makes this pack configurable, comfortably, for day hikes as well as week-long treks.

I went over to Dan's shop and was fortunate enough to try on a super sarc with wide frame. I found it to be noticeably more comfortable (than the regular-size frame), so I also ordered a wider frame. The wider, taller frame is quite wonderful, actually.

I also got 4 compression straps on the sides to enable reduction of pack volume when carrying small loads. Day hike or overnight, the already reduced depth of the pack can be reduced even more with the compression straps and if no lid is needed, just the roll top closure is more than adequate.

I can carry all my water, snacks and small stuff in one of the very large water bottle pockets. But, if need be, I can slap on the summit lid w/pocket for jacket or other quick-access gear or else stuff a jacket under the bungie on the back.

I've tested it as a full-up multi-day pack with 40 pounds as well as a reduced-volume day pack with 15 pounds. The pack looks and functions exactly as I envisioned. Couldn't be more satisfied. I will be able to use this pack carrying 15 to 40 pounds with comfort.

The weight of the pack, in its heaviest config is 4 lbs and in the lightest config is 3.25 lbs. I've noticed there's excessive strap length so who knows, a couple ounces of strap might eventually disappear, but I'm in no hurry.
