Paddy - for the trucks, is that for light duty (1/2 ton) or an average for all trucks (1/2 ton thru 1 ton and up)?
I would really like to see a Ford Ranger (ext. cab) with a 4 cylinder diesel engine. They sell them in S. America but can't do so here because of emissions (so I've heard). I would think that with the diesel engineering coming out of Europe (in regards to emissions) that this would be a good selling vehicle.
Indeed. although I hate to say it, because yes, it's bashing north american carmakers perhaps unfairly, but at least for the first bit I'd like to see the likes of ford on the small truck partnering with VW, mercedes, volvo/penta or one of those companies for the small diesel. I would buy such a vehicle if it were available where I am. However (and I believe historically the comment is fair) imo, North american companies have a lousy reputation at making good small diesel engines, likely because they've not historically had the market for it. But put it this way, I'd probably be in the market to buy a truck like that within the next year or two, if it were available with an engine brand I trusted. OTOH, I probably wouldn't want to be a "beta tester" for a new model ford engineered small diesel like that. I would wait and just go buy a jetta or honda fit, keeping my current beater pickup around instead. The attraction to the small truck like that is to get something with good mileage and I can send the beater pickup to the scrap heap.
Note, to be fair I'll also say, I've never seen the euro weenies make a small truck that was worth a crap either.
