Not to mention that if your problem is hair of the dog pine so thick you can't put up a tent, you'll still have problems getting a hammock and tarp strung up, trust me, that kind of bush is a pita for hammocking too (unless you do a little government work and whack a few of 'em down...)

Now if there's clear spots with just uneven ground, you're ok. but if you don't like sleeping in a hammock, you don't like sleeping in a hammock. Sounds like a good candidate for just putting an 8x10 tarp over the canoe on it's paddles (or purpose built poles) - you could probably find a way to mount them in the canoe.
