Most people use a propane torch, but I don't have one. I held it over the flame of my gas stove. It was hard to do this way, because you can't see the effect the heat is having in real time, unless you squat below the stove and look up, I suppose, but that's not practical. You just have to keep it moving and get a feel for how fast to move it. Turn it over every minute or so to see what effect it's having. You use green bamboo, and it turns color as you go. It takes awhile, so be patient. Oh, and WEAR GLOVES! Not only does the bamboo itself get really hot, but steam escapes out of the pressure relief holes and can burn you very quickly.
