If my base layer is fuzzy for comfort, the fabric of a fleece mid layer sticks instead of sliding. That leads to needing the insulation layer to be nylon lined. Is that all the choices that I have? So I need a base layer with a flat surface on the exterior just to accomodate the mid layer fabric? Is that why vests are so popular, nylon interior and no friction from no sleeves? Anyone know where to get a reversible microfleece/nylon jacket with pit zips and no heavy knit cuffs for a mid layer?

With a heavy base layer, are you only wearing the insulation layer at lunch or in camp so friction between layers doesn't matter?

I ususally wear a polypro base layer, which most things seem to slide on. I'll often put
merino and/or fleece over that with no problems.

Red Ledge makes a product called Reversitech Fleece which Campmor sold but doesn't any longer. However, a boat outfitter does. I have the zip top and pant bottom that I use while running. The inside is smooth so you can wear it facing out as a mid layer or just running/active and the fleece side out as underwear. I love them. Very durable. Cabela sells something similar but double the price. You can wear them any way that works for you, really. I've worn them both ways for an inner and outer layer, depending on the temps. It isn't a jacket, but with a vest or windbreaker, it's perfect.
