I'm a very happy camper, having just got my e-mail confirmation for another GC trip. Hermit Trail to Granite Rapids. Since my wife and I have only been on the corridor trails and camped with the metal boxes supplied, I'm looking for something to fend off the squirrels , mice and ravens . I've hear ringtails are also a problem, but that's a critter I'd stay up all night just to see!
I really don't want to use our bear can, bombproof though they may be; I was thinking more in line with the Ursack. Anyone use the Ursack or similar and care to make suggestions?

I've used the Ursack in the GC with never an issue. I do hang it either from available trees (mesquite or acacia) or from rocks. I've used this system since the Park pulled out the ammo boxes from the frequented campsites and never lost a bite.

I Have a permit for Hermit's Rest to Hermit Rapids to Monument Creek to Horn Creek and then out via Bright Angel trail in early May this year. I'll use the same system this time with no worries.

A lot of folks just use their food as a pillow but if you are cowboy camping the mice and ants will interupt your sleep. You could also get a face wash from a ringtail.

Thanks, Pika. If it works for you, it's good enough for us. Have a great hike. On your advice, we brought our full tent last year and slept comfortably. We had some pretty hard rain and wind and were glad for the added weather protection , let alone keeping ants out. First week of April for us, and we also have one night at Monument Creek before we head back up. I thought about going up Bright Angel, but my wife didn't like the last mile. She almost got bumped off the trail by some obnoxious day hikers. I kept my head up and stayed alert for people not paying attention. It's amazing they only average 250 rescues a year.
