I have the map from johnson city's site of the buffalo mountain trails. I also have the national geographic map of the area, but these trails are not on that map (other than the buffalo mountain trails.
If anyone knows a way to get a map like this I would greatly appreciate it. I may try to find a copy of the book as cheap as it is, but like I said, I would prefer a topo map of the trails if thats available.
gpsdepot.com doesn't currently have maps on it. Is there perhaps a different site you were thinking of?

You might try using Garmin's "Basecamp" with maps you can find at www.gpsdepot.com. That have topos and some trail maps there. All of these are free.
That domain wasn't renewed... url doesn't work.
You could download USGS topos for free. But those don't have a lot of the more recent trail networks, or at least they haven't in my area.
Calling the jurisdiction responsible for the wilderness area/national forest in question might be a good way to locate a source of maps - usually they sell them in the national forest offices around here.

Bill, thanks for the links. I'm working on getting that software downloaded as we speak.
As far as the USGS maps go, those are about useless in that area. I already have them, they dont even have the trails that the nat geo map has much less the others. They do have all the fourwheeler trails where I ride around here though, so they are pretty nice sometimes. I checked them first for this area because of my luck with the fourwheeler trails, but they had nothing.
If these trails are not on the maps from the link the guy who put the maps together said anyone can send him trail info from a gps and he'll add them. I would gladly do that, but my gps does not link to my computer properly. I am considering upgrading my gps, because I also do alot of geocaching, and it would be amazing to have a unit that will link to my computer allowing cordinates to be added that way instead of manually. I would never trust it for a main source of directions, because I know how unreliable they can be, but it would be nice to be able to map trails to be able to give back a little, and to have them on a map for my own use later.
Bill, I have downloaded the map files and the software you suggested, as well as the software the map maker suggested, but I can't figure out how to put the map files into the software. I also cant find instructions anywhere on how to do it. If you could point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.

If you're using a Mac (I am) I think you need to download Garmin's "Map Manager" and "Map Installer" software too.
What are you using? The GPS File Depot has some instructions posted for both Windows and Mac.
I think the PC "BaseCamp" software has built-in tools for installing the maps. Garmin also has "MapSource" software for Windows, and that might be what you need to install the maps on your PC.
i've used the directions on gps file depot, but when i follow this links instructions http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-.img-files-into-mapsource-with-mapsettoolkit/#tdb i get an error saying "family id exists" cant figure out the issue, and their instructions dont go any further. I guess this is gonna take a few days to figure out from the looks of it. Thanks for the help, if I figure anythign out I'll update the thread here.

My Mac does some weird stuff that sucks too. I wish I could, but I can't offer any help for Windows. There's a forum at GPS File Depot that might have people that can.
Keep working at it, there are some great maps there and once you have it up and running you'll want to play with them all.
Not sure what I was doing wrong, but its working now. Problem is, none of the maps available from that site have topo and trail on them. I think I can use the tools to pull coordinates from the trail maps and draw them on the topos myself. I'll probably play around with it some over the next few days. Probably not tonight though. Getting it working is about enough excitement for one day :P

The maps are made to be "Layered". On my Garmin GPS I can show the trails on top of the topo maps.
But the Basecamp software doesn't support that. You can only view one map at a time, no layers.
I figured that the Windows version would support that, and that the Mac version was lagging behind.
If you can download a ".GPX" file that will show a "Track" someone has recorded and posted online you can use that with Basecamp and the topo maps you get there.
