a friend and I are looking at video cameras, we would like to take one on our hike of the AT next year and I was wondering what type of camera people use, and what you would recommend for us. We plan on possibly making a documentary out of the footage we film on the trail. We both do not know a lot about current tech related to video cameras.

thanks.

I've seen good trail videos from both Sarbar and Jason Klass here - maybe pm 'em - I can't
comment, the only video I ever take is off of my little olympus digital camera.. It's ok for
moon shots walking down the beach at night (never give your camera to a fellow hiker to take pictures of your moon).. but not the kind of quality you're probably considering.

Sorry I didn't see this post before!

We have two video cameras - one is a Canon HAI pro HD, the other is a Canon consumer HD. We don't use the consumer one much anymore due to it being an internal memory - the issue lies in that we can't keep swapping out tapes. Ugh!

We use Final Cut Pro now for editing on a Mac

Now, them low brow videos I shoot for my YouTube channel? Those painful delights I just shoot on my regular digital camera.

If you want quality and good sound go for as high as you can afford, get HD and get a mic system if you are doing voices, or if shooting nature, get a wind buffer A consumer model is all most would need. And they fit in your palm as well. The pro one is light for what it is....but man does it suck to pack it!

We learned the hard way I can tell you Ugh!

would a Creative Vado or a Flip Ultra work for what you need it for?

Update!

My husband got me a Kodak Zi6 camera back in March. In pink it was super cheap wink Works well and takes AA batteries which is something I wanted.

I think thats a perfect solution to the AT problem - put cameras all along it that record your cell phone signature, facial features, iris pattern etc, then the feds will know exactly where everyone is and was all the time and you can feel safe, like those electronic handcuffs, so then they can solve crimes more better.
Jim YMMV goodjob

uh... what?

and to update a very old thread, i did not end up hiking because of a new job, and the pair hiking are going to start doing some filming once they get rid of their colder weather gear and loose a little weight.
