Can someone give me suggestions on a good head piece? Materials and styles preferred? I'll buy or build myself so save a few pennies, but the sewing will require a pattern or good pictures for me to follow. Thanks.

I've used this free pattern a few times with Stretch fleece. I found it worked best with a serged flat seam but you could just size up if need be.

robi-

Thanks very much for the link. I just spent at least a half-hour perusing the site. Fascinating! It was so cool to see someone on the other side of the planet (more or less) posting about similar efforts to what we are making over here.

Did anyone else see the pillow pics? It looks as if this fellow is using kids' arm floaties, the flat side cut off, very much like our own StoveStomper posted a few years back. The twist is that this guy made a sack for a pair of them and ran the drawstring under the sleeping mat back to the other side of the sack to anchor the "pillow" in place. Brilliant!

Oh, yeah, he had a reference to a lightweight backpacking site in the UK.

Gotta love it!

Is this a european themed post???
The andersj site is incredible and I need to check out more of shelby kaava.
I have made a couple fleece hats that I simply traced the pattern from an existing hat. While they did not turn out perfect, they worked. Unfortunately I prefer hats I aquired along the way, so do not use any homemade hats. Simple patterns from your local fabric store would work and be fairly cheap. Ever concider knitting?

There are four places I go on line when I need help.

Here,

Penny's

shelby.fi

and Anders site.

There really is no reason to look at any other sites regarding sewing gear...

I recently made a "Buff" from a piece of remnant fleece. Simply cut a piece off that will go around your head by 16-18" long, then sew it up in a long tube. It is a versatile piece of headgear and can be worn as a cap, a hat, a headband, a neck warmer, or a balaclava.

Check out the Buff:

Sewing a hat shouldn't be that difficult and won't take a lot of material. I'm gonna make some sleeping fleece socks cause I have a feet cold. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Thanks, Hoz! I believe that is EXACTLY what I am looking for. It is multifunctional. Just the thing. I might even be able to mothball my bandana? It looks like the microfleece being used for these is stretchy?

yes, the fleece I used had it's usual stretch. The "commercial made" buffs use microfleece. Mine is made from regular old WalMart fleece. Of course it has a seam down the length but I don't feel any pressure points or headaches.

I paid 2 bucks for the remnant and have enough material to make 2-3 more Buffs!!!

Maybe I'll make some matching mittens next.

A note about the shelby kaava pattern. It claims it can be used for non-strech, but you definately need to size it much bigger. Last night I made an insulated bomber hat with the pattern. I am a size large so I added a half inch seam to the xl. The xl fit tight so I used that cap for the inside. I made the pattern a half inch bigger yet (1 inch total) for the insulation and outer nylon. It fits but its very tight. I might add a spacer to make it more comfortable.
So the pattern does work, but give it a 1.5 inch extra to make an insulated hat with it.
It looks like an old school leather football helmet. I like it even though its tight.

Thanks everyone for your wonderful suggestions. Now I have inspiration and ideas of lots of different ways to go with this. Already I'm warming up to the idea of making a few! Also, I want to thank everyone for indulging a noobie question and not getting all hot-headed with me.
