Drift Creek Wilderness, on the Oregon coast. Just east of Waldport.

Nice nifty little old school external frame there!.

Does sherpa hammock with you or sleep in the tarp?

I was using the hammock as a chair and to relax in. The tarp was for eating under if it rained. I actually slept in my Tarptent Cloudburst with Sherpa. I purposely brought extra weight to test my external frame pack out (3.3 lbs...empty). When i hammock, i use the tarp over me and Sherpa sleeps directly under the set up. Works out well, since i am only inches away from his head if he gets scared...he's a big chicken after dark and prefers the tent. He's real brave in the daylight, though....

My springer's fine sleeping anywhere (although I don't take him hiking generally) - but in terms of being a big chicken - literally - I have a chicken in a cage in my backyard awaiting a practical joke to be played on someone's office tonight. - and my dog is scared of the chicken. go figure.

bigfoot2:

You written about that external frame pack before and I just missed it? Seems kind of counter-revolutionary. You make it or store bought? Send me to Search if you've discussed it before.

Liked the pix.

Kev,
No, i just threw it together last week. It's an old Jansport D-3 frame that i stripped of all extra weight. I took off the bag bar shelf, stripped off the pack bag, sawed off the lower frame with a hack saw and viola...El Cheapo Luxury-Lite! I added an 11 ounce G-4 type Rodney pack that i bought used as the pack bag. I threaded the G-4's hip belt through the back of the frame, put the shoulder straps over the top bar and buckled the sternum strap...very secure. The best part is that i have an 11 ounce day pack for side trips and i can just take the pack bag off and bring it into the tent with me...leaving the frame outside. Total weight is only about 3.3 lbs. and it can really carry some weight. I always liked the wings on the hip belt of those old Jansports, just not the weight of them. The one thing i will add is a better set of shoulder straps with a sternum strap. If you want pics, PM me your e-mail.

I don't know Big, after looking at those pictures, I don't think you have enough hair to be called bigfoot. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I used to have big ol' Bon Jovi hair in the 80's...i think it was all the hair spray that made it all fall out <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Sounds like a good reason not to use hair spray. I still have some hair, so I better stay away. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
