Bear mauls woman near Caliente
The Bakersfield Californian | Tuesday, Jul 22 2008 12:13 PM

A woman out walking her two dogs Tuesday morning was mauled by a bear but managed to drive herself to a fire station and was airlifted to an L.A.-area hospital.

The woman suffered severe cuts to her face and head in the 10 a.m. attack near Caliente, Kern County Fire Department spokesman Sean Collins said.

“For her to be attacked in that manner and drive to a fire station she must have been running on pure adrenaline,” Collins said.

One of the dogs was killed, Collins said, but local TV stations were reporting that both had been found alive. Collins did not know the woman’s condition as of noon.

Collins said he has not heard of a bear attack happening locally for at least six years.

Early TV news report.
