Video help - 05/28/08 12:33 PM

I took a video on my last outing that I would like to share. I took it with a Canon A560. I tried several times to upload to youtube, but it kept saying wrong format. The extension on my file is .AVI - how to I change the format on this file. I tried to save it as something else but could not. I read the vague instructions that I could find on youtube- so now what?

Your Canon camera probably came with a disc. Mine did. It contains photo management software including a program to convert movie formats.

There's also freeware on the web.

Never uploaded to Youtube so I can't help you there.

I also have a Canon (a SD600) and have had no problem uploading using Picasa (picasaweb.google.com). 'Fraid I'm of no help when it comes to YouTube.

I uploaded my first you tube video this week. AVI should be ok.
Do you have a you tube account? Easy to do and a requirement for uploading.

All I did was save the videos from my Canon SD800 to my harddrive and use the upload function on the you tube account. It seemed to take forever, about a minute per MB.

don't know if this helps or not

Don't know why You Tube does not accept your.AVI files but try this.
Download Rad from http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm .
With this program you can change file formats and compress your files as well. Try .AVI to MPEG 4
Use the convert file button, make sure the convert audio option (on the convert page) is checked.
There is a help button on the front page.
( I have only tested .MOV to .AVI so I am not sure it will work for you)

I uploaded four different avi files to youtube this week, I don't think that is the problem.

It says this right in the help files,
Quote:
YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats such as .WMV, AVI , .MOV, and .MPG transferred from most digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones.

A couple of possible reasons ..
1) the file is too big (you can use Movie Maker or RAD to shrink them)
In Movie Maker you have several options under Finish movie (send to the web is one)
2) you are trying to load the .THM file (video thumbnail file) and not the .AVI file.

Thanks Franco - Movie Maker was the trick. It had been almost a year since I uploaded a video - Copperheads Mating- I knew it was possible, but could not remember how.
Remember this post so that next year you can remind me again.
