Backpacker Magazine site - 03/29/08 10:08 AM

I have given up on the Backpacker Magazine website. I'm tired of the Circuit City (and other) pop-ups and the constantly changing, confusing format where the forums access is virtually a hide-and-seek game.

Too bad, it COULD be a nice website if the "Web Designers" were interested in making it useful instead of a "cute" advertising gimmick.

I still subscribe to the magazine but the website is trash.

Sorry you had such a bad experience there.

I bookmarked the forums directly and that link always takes me directly there with no fuss. As for popups, I don't get any. Probably because I'm using Firefox with the blocker on.

I still prefer this site though.

Seriously consider installing a copy of firefox, and install "noscript" - you can then selectively allow javascript only when you need it. Gets rid of most of the annoying stuff.

You should be careful with all that stuff anyway - browser attacks are becoming a lot
more common.

Yep! I have AdBlock Plus and see none of it <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Me too. I rarely see or go to the rest of the site. And I don't get any pop-ups either. I use IE6 with its standard (MSN?) pop-blocker.

The forums themselves are quite good and a favorite of mine.

Sorry you feel that way. It really is a great forum over there. I have a pop-up blocker so I never see the ads. Also, I have a direct link to the forum bookmarked so I don't have to go to the main site to access the forums.

Yeah, I am going to go back to AdAware & I'll just bookmark the forums to avoid all teh intro crap. Thanks for the advice guys.

But still, BAckpacking Magazine's site is FAR more commercialized than it was a few years ago. Plus the webmaster's redesign is not attractive or user-friendly.

Yeah. I don't minding surfing but having to become technicaly savy to navigate the site is something I don't have time for. Didn't someone say that computers would eliminate paper? I still like to acctually hold a book or magazine in my hands and just read. When I'm finished with each current issue, I pass em along to someone else.

Better to be grumpy and old than just grumpy. I count my lucky stars that I've made it this far without too much incident. Reaching old age is, in my opinion, a form of art.
