sleeping bag to big - cold - 01/27/08 09:31 AM

Hi All
this post is dedicated to Wandering Daisy who is thin and gets cold in her bag. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Regarding bags that seem too big and seem to not meet their temp specs. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Fit is critical, AND there is something you can do.
there are two techniques I have used to make a too large of bag warm and cozy.

1) Sew a nylon tube an inch in diameter, and long as your sleeping bag is wide. Then sew it to the inside of your sleeping bag about knee height. Pull a thin piece of elastic through it and adjust the tension and sew inplace. Then do one near your waist. I leave the top part of bag unmodified so there is more room to stretch out.

The bag will now gently cling to you and actually loft more, and be MUCH warmer.

OR
2) Use a LARGE needle and 1/16" elastic cord. Push the needle through the inner shell of your bag near the zipper. Work the needle across through the down and out the otherside near the zipper. Adjust tension and sew in place.

You're welcome

What about duct tape on the outside? Just wrap the tape around the outside when you are in the bag. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> OK, bad idea. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I could just pig out and get fat - problem solved!

Thanks for the idea. I may just give it a try.

actually it would work. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I have tied a couple of pieces of nylon cord around me inside my sleeping bag to keep it closer and make it warmer. It seems that being closer and divided into 3 areas made it warmer than the loss of down compression directly under the cord.

Just think of my design as extra "draw cords" like at the top of the bag, only in elastic so you can stretch out in it if you have to.
