Whoo hoo! More daylight on its way. - 12/22/13 10:22 AM

Whoo hoo! The days are getting longer. IMO the new year starts today. I always look forward to the beginning of longer days and more of that wonderful sunlight. Well, when the sun decides to play along. laugh By the way, happy holidays and a healthy, happy and prosperous new year to all.

I agree, this really should be the start of the new year. After reaching this point I'm always amazed at how wonderful even ten more minutes of daylight is laugh

Doing the sunlight dance now! I feel for those in AK, I couldn't handle the short days.

Don't "spend it all in one place." :-)

Confess to feeling a little guilty with our endless string of 60+ degree days, given it's the driest year in California history, but it IS nice to be out in it.

Cheers,

I will admit we haven't been out this winter, been warm weather (above 0F) and beautiful snow... but the days are just so incredibly short - and heck the other day my husband was joking with me - Alaska winters the only place you can sleep in and go to bed early and STILL see the sun rise / set. (I slept in ... significantly) and my response was, are you sure the sun is up? Even at noon it didn't look daylight-ish.

Ah, but I loved the long days still in August when I was up there. Got to take in as much as I could while I was there, sleeping was for the short night.

Out of idle curiosity I checked the spot forecast for Red Peak Pass in Yosemite (the park's highest at about 11,300'). Today's high is 50 and the overnight low is 26. On the third day fo winter.

Why aren't I hiking? ETA those were about the same temps as when I last hiked the pass in August '10.

Christmas day at Mt Greylock our highest peak in MA will be H16 and L10 F. Elevation 3491. I like your forecast better frown

Lying forecasters. Temps were supposed to be in the 20's, but I got minus 2F this Christmas AM, east of Carson Pass on 88 here in N CA. I had my WM Apache 15F bag. Luckily I had my down clothing to drape over me. Used my old MSR Whisperlite Int'l from '89, it sees little action these days with all my other stoves I can use.

Brr...

So with the extra clothing were you able to get some sound sleep or was the cold gnawing at you all night?

Actually, I slept fairly well between waking up so many times and having to try to go back to sleep. I think the cold helped, just the sore shoulders and knees woke me back up. I checked my watch twice, at 1 and around 6. Had it made by then, got up at 6:45. Broke camp at 8:15, no sugar so had black coffee and no oatmeal, just a large cookie.
