Backpacking from Canada to Italy

Hi please help! I'm about to backpack to Italy. I'm from Canada and I'm looking for a cheapest direct flight or connecting flight from Canada to Italy. What airlines is the cheapest etc.? Or where in Europe is a good idea to have a connecting flight first from Canada?

Where from in Canada do you fly?
The big "hubs" are London, Paris, and Frankfurt. Easy to get a connecting flight to Italy.
Flights to Rome are worth investigating, too.
Try kayak.com, Skyscanner, or any other flight search engine.

You might get better answers on a budget travel forum such as Lonely Planet. This forum is for "backpacking" in the sense of wilderness trekking. Most of our members here have traveled, but not all our experience is recent.
