Hi-tec boots for snowshoeing - 02/03/08 12:37 PM

I starting to get into snowshoeing for snow camping. Need to know if anyone or you know of someone that have used these type of boots for basic Snowshoeing. I plan to use gaiters and sno-seal if these boots will work, if not can you recommend some lightweight boots under $100( I have looked at Sorel and NF Chilkats a bit heavy)

Those would probably do fine, but I usually try to get taller boots.

Under $100, that's pretty easy. The best deal I have found would be these:

I use these for snowshoeing:

I don't worry about weight to much, but that's just me. Just as long as the boot is comfortable and warm.
Check out Cabela's, gijoes, campmor.com, sierratradingoutpost.com.

Good luck.

"Weld",

I like the 1st boots Atec listed. full length gaiters on them would give you another 10 F of warmth. All the others are feltpacs. Warm but heavy.

My BEST recommendation for most bearable winter weather (to -20 F), price no object, are Rocky SnowStalkers W/ 1,200 gm Thinsulate insulation )in camo only)
B/C they have a removable PU closed-cell foam liner.

This is very important in winter camping. Gotta keep felt or foam liners in yer bag at night so's yer tootsies are not encased in ice blocks in the morning. Gotta keep felt liners dry (to stay warm) by always wearing a VBL sock.

I found Keen Growler's for $65 at Dick's sporting goods. eVent, -25F rated, though my feet got cold at 0F in them around camp. When moving they were plenty warm.

I went on a snowshoe trip around Bert's lake next to Loon lake( 3 mile hike-started at 6100 reached 6836-then back down) using these boots ( sno-sealed and gaiters) work just fine, for my first time out.

I used a pair of MSR Lightning Ascent snowshoes , the day was 40-55 degrees. Snow was mostly packed powder

I'm hooked on shoeing now. I think I will invest in a good pair of Columbia Bugloo's for next season when I start snow camping.

Thanks to all for the tips.

Mike

P.S. Forgot used REI Mountain gaiters
