Hi All
Since I get hit on the head a lot, I pretty much always wear a helmet when skiing, even cross country, and since I pretty much always Backcountry ski when camping, I am always wearing a helmet when winter camped.

So anyway I was out in the blizzard in ski gear [including helmet and balaclava] and spent quite a while cruising around the Hood. I was quite comfortable and my face was protected.

A while later [dressed warmly with hat and hood] I went out with the dog for a walk and was not wearing helmet/balaclava/goggles with adjustable neck randonee jacket and it was pretty miserable and cold, with snow blowing into my hood. It was bad enough to make me think twice about hiking out in that storm dressed that way.

So a secret - wear a blizzard ready helmet with rose colored downhill goggles and a balaclava when back country ski camping so you can ski out in most any conditions. The neoprene face masks absorb less water.

Hey Jim, Happy birthday (again).

Are you wearing the balaclava under the helmet? My helmet is a tight fit, and I can't fit one under it. I have a face mask, but rarely need it down here. I saw some of the football players wearing them at the Packers-Giants game this past weekend. It was something like 0F and below without the wind chill. Not a game I'd want to be watching while sitting in the stands unless I was really bundled up in my big parka.

I don't think I'll take my helmet to Yosemite for cross-country, but I may bring it in case I want to take a tele lesson at Badger Pass-I'll need it then for sure.

Hey, if you're walking around your neighbourhood wearing a helmet and rose coloured glasses, well...........maybe you're living on the wrong side of town
Happy birthday.

I don't think I have ever been as cold in the outdoors as I was watching my first pro football game in Cleveland (long time ago - it was Otto Graham's last game) and that includes trips on the Mexican volcanoes and on Denali. I may have come close on some scuba dives. One of life's simple pleasures is watching such games on the tube....

OIdranger, I went to college in northern Ohio, so I know what you are talking about. The famous Lake Effect.

Rose colored goggles helps you see the terrain better in flat light conditions. Last week I was skiing in such bad conditions I could not see 30 feet in front of me, even with the rose glasses. I'm learning to trust my feet. And Midnight - my body is learning "muscle memory" now about downhill balance. I let my legs do the skiing now.

The mtn hardware smart wool balaclava fits under the helmet. It can cover my nose and everything not covered by helmet and goggles.

Midnight, You should see me in my helmet and spandex climbing tights... Yeh I only wore em in Yosemite to impress the tourist ladies. I had some awesomely hard glutes and quads.
