Where are you going this summer?

Where are you going this summer? - 02/21/17 10:36 AM

Since this is the time when some of us start planning summer trips, I thought it would be interesting to hear some of your plans for the 2017 backpacking season!

This will be a big one for me because I haven't gone for 2 years and I'm hoping to do:
One or two shorter trips in the Mummy Range of RMNP, which is local for me.
A week long trip in August that will take me back to one of my favorite places, the Wind Rivers.

Got any plans for this summer?

Well, so far I have a four day trip planned for the Grand Canyon in late April, a section hike of the PCT between Sonora Pass and Tuolumne Meadows (September), a traverse of the Santa Catalina Mountains (May), a trip in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada (July) and several 1-2 night trips in the local Sky Island mountains of SE Arizona. This is, of course, assuming that my aging carcass holds up😀

Hoping to hike about 300 miles of PCT in NorCal in July with a friend who plans to do that. More snow than usual at this point, which might have an impact on that so thus not positive ...

Looking at a few trips on the East side--Duzy Basin--but it all depends on snow. And maybe in August the Timberline trail in Oregon, since I'll be there for a conference...

At this stage the furthest I can go is kicking the tires on a few intriguing ideas. I would love to haul my wife up to Goat Rocks Wilderness in WA, where she has never been. For my solo backpacking, I have plans that center on the Sawtooth Wilderness in Idaho, which I sketched out last year, but could not put into action due to life complications. Both these would be excellent trips, but I'll need to see how the stars align in July and August.

And of course everyone is heading for the path of totality for the total eclipse of the sun on August 21. It's evidently going to be the most crowded chunk (or rather, line) of real estate on the planet.

Yup, I grew up in Oregon and will spend the eclipse time visiting a friend who lives in the Salem area. Great excuse to get together!

coyote gulch, in april, grand canyon end of april, hoping to go back to where I started backpacking and do the Tahoe Rim Trail solo for the big 40 this summer, and then if all goes well my plans to return to Chile in december (their summer) after almost 20 years will come true and I will be in patagonia again. I am hoping to make this a great year!!

Wow, some cools plans for sure. Only one I've done is the Grand Canyon. Did visit both the Ruby Mountains and the Sawtooths on a long road trip last summer-both very beautiful. PCT is a place I'd like to get to someday but it's a little out of my area. Most of my destinations are no more than a days drive away.
Not planning on tying anything into the eclipse event. Probably because I'm scheduled to do a trip right before it. That would be awesome though!
Whitehorse, Yukon-Now that sounds pretty out there! Don't really know zip about that area.
Chile & Patagonia-Know a little about from friends who have gone, looks incredible! Don't think I'll be doing that one unless I hit the lottery......

Thanks for sharing your plans!! Could inspire me to get outside my Central Rockies box!

End of March I have a 3 day trip in Saguaro Nat'l Park, entering the Douglas Spring Trailhead, exiting Tanque Verde.
April, is up in the air, but I have 10 days off and hope to go to some flowery spring trips in Califonia, such as Big Sur, the Carrizo Plain, and Henry Coe State Park.
Memorial Day I think I may finally do a local trip I have wanted to do for years: hike from Point Reyes to the Marin Headlands, with a little stealth camping along the way (shhh!)
My big trip planned is 4 weeks in Iceland and 2 weeks in Greenland in July-Aug. Lots of backpacking, but no suntanned legs for me this summer!

I'm more so chiming into this thread to get some ideas on new places to go. Everyone has picked some amazing places. I definitely have some great ideas about where I might want to go to broaden my horizons.

My only concrete plans are to hike Eagle Rock Loop in mid April, if the river isn't too high.
