Early snowshoe, Herman Gulch - 11/29/11 02:10 PM

Just got back from a great little snowshoe on the Herman Gulch trail Sunday, Nov 27th. The hike was about 6 miles RT.

It's a convenient outing, starting at the trailhead 50 yards from I-70 at the last westbound exit before the Eisenhower Tunnel (at 10.4K') and heading up to Herman Lake at 12K'. We didn't put on our snowshoes 'til a quarter-mile into the hike, but there was plenty of snow after that.

It was a cloud-free, no-wind day with a temp. at the start of 35F and probably 25F at the lake. (Not bad, since it'll be below zero up there on Thur.) Here's the pix:

Near the start, still not in our snowshoes.

Hiking buddy JJ with Pettingel Peak behind.

Peak to the NE, blowing snow on the ridge.

Trail heading up.

Pettingel Peak and willows in the gulch.

Shadows.

Above treeline, the lake near.

Destination: Frozen Herman Lake.

Lunch break on a rock.

View to the east.

Wind coming up, we head down, the Citadel in the background.

Heading down & east.

A fast descent.

Pettingel Peak framed in fir.

Mt. Sniktau (13.2K') to the south.

Cooool, and I'm not talking temperature. I'm envious.
