Other Uses for a Camp Stove - 07/03/08 09:54 AM

As I prepare for the 4th of July festivities and fire works watching I got to thinking, Why not take my new campstove out and get some use out of it? I just bought my first stove, an MSR Dragonfly, and it still has that new gadget must use as much as possible aura. Has anyone ever tried to use their campstove to cook popcorn? I was thinking of one of those jiffy pop popcorn things, My concern is that it looks like the camp stove puts out a lot of heat and I was wondering if it might not burn through the bottom of the popcorn thingy.

You can certainly make popcornon on your stove just keep shaking it back and forth to keep it from scorching. I often take regular popcorn and oil when back packing and cook it in my pot. I have used my stove to heat rocks to put in my wet boots to dry them too.

Oh, and I thought you meant "other uses than cooking" - I managed to assist in using one
once when I was a kid to do a messy soldering job on the radiator of a 1966 land rover <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> The result
was adequate, - but resulted in a propane torch being carried in the landrover forever after.

There are other uses but in the interest of safety I won't explain them. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

I was once camped at the bottom of a canyon and was stargazing one night. I noticed a dim star which appeared to be moving and thought it might be a satellite until I realized that its movements appeared to be fairly random. To make a long story shorter, I can tell you that I eventually learned that this star was in fact the blue light of someone's stove which they were using as a flashlight to find their way down into the canyon. Keep in mind that this was a STEEP canyon with several sheer drop offs. I don't think this use of a stove is what you had in mind and I certainly wouldn't recommend it but this use did present an amusing distraction for me and my group.
