Syrup (I shouldn't have put this in gear talk) - 06/03/08 10:37 AM

Hello,

I'm going to make pancakes on a trip this weekend and I'm looking for something that I can add water to and make syrup. I'm taking a 3 day hike with a friend and I don't like to carry a lot of weight, I'm a very small fellow. Water will not be a problem on this trip so anything that is dehydrated would be preferable. Any ideas?

Brown sugar heated with water. One part brown sugar to two parts water should do it depending on the consistancy you want. Make some at home in the microwave and note the ratios once you get what you are looking for.

If you can get maple sugar, it of course works well too - about the same recepie depending on how thick you want it. Trouble is it's expensive and hard to find.

Mind you, when I make flapjacks in the bush I'm ususally just as happy to dump
brown sugar right on them (or roll them up with brown sugar in them)

Sugar and water, plus Mapleine flavoring? That's all we had at home when I was a kid, couldn't afford Log Cabin except as a treat! You could bring a 2 ml or 5 ml dropper bottle of the Mapleine, it would way next to nothing.

Uh, yeah, maple sugar in Texas...the season brings back memories.
In fact it would work great since it's the same stuff only without water. Mom would make 'maple' syrup form brown sugar/water and we'd never know the difference.
Like you, I'd just dump a little powdered sugar on the pancakes and be one happy camper.

Splenda & a small bottle of Mapleine.
Per equal volume, Splenda is much lighter than sugar or brown sugar.

Take away my UL crown....but if I am making pancakes, waffles, etc...the only thing gracing that carb fest is the real stuff. Yes, I admit it: I am a maple syrup snob.
In fact, I love maple syrup so much that I use it in baking and cooking even. Corn syrup? Eek! Begone evil stuff! It IS worth the weight!

Most New England purveryors of Maple Syrup sell dried maple syrup in small plastic 3 oz bottles. I use it for oatmeal topping but you can dilute it in warm water to make a syrup.

It is also called maple sugar at times (though you want the chunky stuff). It is really good!

You actually pack the syrup with water in it? Geez - get a good grade of maple sugar!
(Yes it's brutally expensive and a pita to find..)

Actually I'm surprised if you like it that much that you haven't grabbed the big jug of Canada A medium at Costco and run it through your dehydrator!

Phat, even though maple sugar is like gold in price I do know where you can source it in bulk.....any of the major sugarhouse equiptment suppliers sell it for resale in bulk packaging ....when I used to do a bit of 'sugarin' back in the day, I thought of getting it for resale at the farmstand. Imagine....'Earthling's Mothership' brand maple syrup

Well.....lets just say that while I can get maple sugar at PCC co-ops here it is ungodly pricey! Eek! And honestly? I prefer the real stuff

Unless you can find dehydrated maple syrup (AKA maple sugar) before the weekend, brown sugar heated with a little water at a time works just fine. Both are lightweight. Yum! Pancakes backpacking! What a treat.

Ya' know Jim you can cut your weight down by buying your maple syrup in plastic jugs. When empty they make servicable water containers too

Again, check the major sugarhouse supply catalogs...dang, where's one when ya' need one must'va left it up at the dairy farm in CT
