Enertia Foods and FBC

Enertia Foods and FBC - 09/19/08 10:42 AM

I bought some Enertia Foods meals the other day just to try out. I was reading the instructions and it says to boil for 4 minutes and then set aside for 7-10 minutes. I was wondering whether I could just do like I do with FBC and pour in the boiling water and let it set for a while in a cozy. Boiling for 4 minutes sounds like it would use a lot of fuel.

Anyone have any experience with this?

My friend Steve does them FBC style often <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I'd defer to sarbar's experience, but in my experience, anything I can get off the shelf that
says to boil it for under about 6-7 minutes means I can cozy it for 20 or so and I'm just fine - try at
home first of course but that's been my rule of thumb.

Yep! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Sometimes you have to play with water amounts and sit times, most of the time it will work just fine <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Enertia typically includes "Pouch Directions" on their meals.

From the "San Juan Stroganoff": Add 12 oz boiling water to pouch, then add noodle mix. Seal and set 7-10 min. Add sauce and stir until smooth. CAUTION HOT POUCH!

I cooking mine this way and it turned out well.

Just to copy what has already been said, If an Enertia meal can be cooked in the bag, it has "pouch" cooking instructions included. I imagine you can still do it with the items without these instructions if you tried.

Still the yummiest trail meals i have every used. I likey

El Capitan 3 Bean Chili - Best there is. We even eat this at home.

Mackenzie Chowder
Max Patch Mac & Cheese

These are the three I cannot live without.
DO NOT try the eggs (Sierra Scramble)

I did try a few on some recent hikes. I tried the Parker Pass Potatoes, the Mackenzie Chowder, and the High Country Casserole. The first two were excellent! I'm definitely repeating those. The High Country Casserole didn't turn out as well as I hoped. The pork gravy was lumpy. Could have been my fault I suppose. It still tasted good.

I'm going to be a steady customer.

Drat. you guys had me all prepped to try a few, and they look pretty good. Had a bunch in the cart when I realized... AAAAARGH. they only ship UPS to Canada. UPS to Canada is completely evil incarnate.

Phat-

If you want to try some Inertia products, maybe look at ordering from REI, EMS, or antoher store...

Seriously, I just don't get UPS's Canada issues. Do they not realize y'all are ON THE SAME CONTINENT? I can understand trouble shipping to say the Ivory Coast, but Canada . . .

And if someone wanted to ship in contraband, it would be just as easy to strap it to a moose's rump and aim the moose in phat's direction to be shot down on the other side.

UPS canada has no issues. I just want to be their "independant customs broker" that clears every shipment.

See, there are no customs. There's only 5% GST (Government Sanctioned Theft - our national sales tax). so if I order 15 dollars worth of food, I will pay 75 cents in GST to the government. Which if mailed through the post office they will
present me with a bill for. If mailed through UPS they will
present me with a bill for the 75 cents, and $48 dollars for their expert customs clearing "service". Yeah, I feel serviced all right..

No, I'm not kidding.. never ship anything to anyone in canada by UPS unless you hate them and they're dumb. (I'm not, I refuse the shipments and send them back )

Is there a problem with having someone in US order them and reship them? I am sure that I or someone else would be willing to reship. The problem is that you get double shipping.

Re: put in cozy w/ boiled water & was great - 04/10/09 09:51 AM

The double shipping is part of my suggestion to try ordering from a retailer. There may be a mark-up, but not double shipping, and a likely faster turn-around time.

PHAT- I'M SENDING YOU A PM WITH AN IDEA.

Wow, Phat, that's just, well, criminal. You had mentioned UPS issues before, but I never sought clarification and assumed (incorrectly) that UPS had the issues, not Canada.

You were really serious about those charges, weren't you?

So is snail mail better?

Do they do the same for Fed Ex?

Yep, the only good way to ship out the country is via USPS. Even Alaska can have intense gouging by UPS!

But....many companies won't ship food out of the US due to tight custom rules. The paperwork isn't worth it. I ship around 10 International orders a week for my business and my suggestion is no food in the orders.

When I worked for the Thai importer we would do all International orders on one day, often on Fridays. We did NOT ship food out, only cooking gear. And it had to go via mail. Same with Alaska - it had to go postal.

Otherwise we got fleeced shipping - and so did the customer.

within the country UPS is awesome. however snail mail (post office) where you are turns into canada post at my end which is
actully quite good..

Not fedex express or overnight or everything but ground.
Fedex is good to get stuff here, but NEVER use fedex ground,
they are operated by a different company than fedex and do
the same stupid stuff with a customs broker. I occasionally
order stuff from people on ebay, and they're mystified when
I say I'm not in a hurry, but I want the fedex express not ground - because it actually works out cheaper for me when there is no stupid fee for an expert to multiply by 1.05... smile

Thanks for the shipping info. I invariably have a student from Canada in every class with which I work. It is our practice to ship student's materials home for them. Now I know to make sure I don't do anything that will end up "fleecing" my students.

Re: Enertia Foods and FBC - 04/25/09 09:08 AM

I have had a number of Enertia meals and have always prepared them in their bags with pretty good results. Their breakfast "mushes" are very tasty, and I also have really enjoyed the Rainier Rice, which really warms me up on a cold night!
