Wind river goldens.....

My wife and I are in Lander looking at the maps trying to decide on an area to hit for a shot at some decent goldens. Anybody fished Thumb or Leg lake recently? If these aren't good choices we are thinking of trying to hit the dry creek drainage. It's just a little more inflexible having to hire a guide in the reservation section. We would also like to hit a good lake for cutts or hybrids. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

You do not necessarily have to hire the Indian guide to get into Dry Creek. If you have a high clearance 4wd you can to in via Bob Lakes. There is a trail, not shown on the map, that drops from Little Bob Lake to Dry Creek. I do not know exactly where it is, but it is a reportedly good trail. The road to the "wilderness" boundary is not good - rutty and tight and narrow. The locals use 4-wheelers to get to the trailhead. You would have to have a permit that covered all days parked at the trailhead. You do not need a guide for the Bob Lakes trailhead.

I have not fished Thumb Lake but last year I was up there hiking and saw several guys fishing.

Another place that is easier to get to than Dry Creek is Deep Creek and Ice Lakes. Go in from the Roaring Fork trailhead at Worthen Meadows. There is a good pack trail that drops to Sheep Bridge (this trail is also not shown on USGS maps). The fishing is good (particularly Middle Deep Creek Lake) but I am not sure if there are many lakes with golden. There used to be golden in the upper lakes of Atlantic Canyon.

If you do not mind a long entry, you can get to Dry Creek in two long days from Torrey Creek trailhead out of Dubois. I recall it is about 25 miles. This is an all-public access with no Reservation permit needed.

Hello!!-New member to the forum and 1st time poster here.

This looks like an old thread but I thought I'd reply to the last post about the Little Bob road.
Not sure what the current status is but daisy is correct-no guide required. I've driven it a couple times with the first time being in 2004. It is indeed a 4WD road with some fairly gnarly sections. Only vehicles at the TH at that time were 4-wheelers. The last time I drove it, in 2009, it was in far worse shape than before, and hard to follow in places. No other vehicles were at the TH when we were there. Seems that the main attraction, Little Bob Lake, winter killed or ? sometime prior to 2009 and consequently, road use by locals dramatically decreased.
I believe I checked with tribal authorities beforehand regarding the permit and was led to believe that I only needed a permit for the day in and the day out, which is what we did.

The trail starts out as such from the TH to Little Bob, at least the last time I was on it, then it disappears until you cross the res bound. Then it disappears again and is very hard to find. Probably because, like the road, nobody's using it. Much downed timber in the lower reaches where the trail used to go.

If anyone has more up to date info on the road/trail I'd love to hear it!
