source for topo maps - 05/01/08 11:22 AM

I was looking at a place to hike this weekend (although it's supposed to storm pretty bad, yikes!) and I was trying to find a place to get topographic maps of the area. I've seen this site Trails.com that offers maps but you pay a membership fee. Is this worthwhile? What are other alternatives people use? There are some places that you can get free topographic maps for like the ozark trail here in Missouri

but I'm wondering about the other places.

I used to use topozone, but now that trails.com has purchased them it is fee based. Someone from another forum I frequent was also distraught over the loss of topozone, so he coded his own replacement. http://adirondack-park.net/topo/
It seems to be even better than topozone since it has multiple layers. The focus is obviously on the adirondacks, but the map is for all of the US.

I use expertgps.com. It allows me to look up maps in the US and I only paid 60.00 when I downloaded it a few years ago. I can also xfer from computer to gps and vise versa with the same program. It has been money extremely well spent in my opinion.

If you are looking for full on topo maps, try
http://libremap.org/
I also coded my own map to place the locations of photos on my website., similar to what DTape posted. Here is an empty map without markers with terrain, satellite, street, and topo map (the topo map tiles load slowly, the terrain feature is fast and very cool):

I've downloaded free maps from them. Don't have a printer to print the full size maps, but I can look at them and crop them and print 8 x 11 portions.....

I thought you would burn them to cd then take them to kinkos for large printing? I have never done it, but I thought I read this somewhere.
