Anybody panorama?

My newer little point and shoot digi has a panorama feature where you designate which direction you want to shoot and the next shot has half of the first shot in a ghosty image to the designated side so you can line up your shots.
I did it and then photoshop has an automatic stitch feature that did the rest..check out the results!

I remember my dad doing this in the Rockies and Beartooth Mountains with his 35mm by eye and taping the pictures together...

I had always plan on doing some of these, but have yet to do so in Photoshop. I have one set that I shot to make into a panorama from Red Gap Pass in Glacier NP a couple of years ago. Perhaps I should try it now. On the other hand, I just acquired a Sony A55 DSLR that has a built-in panorama function. I have only tried it with one subject, but it looks like it does a good job stitching.

i tend not to, i dont have an incredibly steady hand and have trouble getting the stitching to fit just so. that being said if you have a tripod, panorama can be really great and give the full effect of the landscape.

Have your tried the bolt, string and washer alternative to a tripod?

What needs to be worked in is some foreground item, like in jwild's (the OP) photo with the tree-topped rock in the water, to make the panorama more interesting, and which I haven't done. This example was handheld, and since then I've bought a couple of lightweight, backpackable tripods that I think will be a big help. ndsol, if you get a chance, post a few shots with that built-in panoramo feature on your dslr; would love to see what they look like.

Years ago, there were all these "virtual reality" 360-degree panoramas of parks at a site called virtualparks.org, such as Erik Goetze's pic of Berry Creek Falls in Big Basin State Park in CA:

I'd love to see these done over (or more of these) with new, higher-megapixel cameras.

I only have one that I have saved to date that I practiced with (I did have my pack on for this training hike ). It is from the top of Barker Dam near home of the bayou that becomes one of the largest ports in the nation. It is straight out of the camera without any retouching (and it can use quite a bit, but the stitching is fine):

My panoramas are low-tech-- just stitch together photos. My new camera does panoramas, but I have yet to learn how to use this function.
