Kayaking around New Orleans, LA - 02/28/11 04:57 PM

I'm going to be on a business trip in New Orleans at the end of April. Doesn't look like much to hike and camp around there, at least that I know of. But there are a several Kayak rentals close by and kayaking in the swamps sounds like fun.

It would be my first time in the swamps so I really would appreciate any feedback like:

  • is this is a good idea?
  • are the swamps nice to kayak in?
  • any specific place you'd recommend?
  • do I need to worry about alligators? I don't have any alligator experience/knowledge.

Jean Lafitte park (right near New Orleans) and Barataria Preserve has some pretty good daywalks. I've been on a few and was wandering around them in november.

Never kayaked in it - the bayous and canals would be fine, lots of the swamp might not have a lot of water and would be unpleasant bashing your paddle on cypress knees even if you could get through.
