where to go.. family canoe trip with friends.

Can anyone recommend a location to go Canoeing for 3 days and possible a place to rent canoes. One of my friends tossed an idea out of taking our families on a calm water canoe trip. Float down stream and camp for a night then float down stream some more and camp, but have no idea where would be a good place to do this. We all live in different locations and have no problem having to drive for a day to the location but hopefully nothing farther east of Colorado, or NM since one of us lives in San Diego. We were first thinking of a river rafting trip and some camping in Colorado but need to find something safer more family oriented for kids 6-2 years of age. We would also need to rent canoes, paddles,and anything else related to canoes.
