OK you creative types out there - 09/17/08 07:19 AM

I am coming to the age where having fenders and being dry outweighs looking cool and like a racer (if only in my mind ).

I have a 1990 or so Lemond road bike which I have converted to a single speed.
I put on one of those bike planet type rear fenders which reduces my rear wetness in the rain. But on the front my racing bike brakes don't accept a fender. I tried some plastic on the down tube but what I am finding is that the road spray from the front tire gets my feet wet...........anyone have any ideas?!?!?!?!

Thanks,

I don't think a fender will stop the spray on your feet. I would look for shoe covers. Bike Nashbar and Performance have some on their websites.

Velo Orange fenders and a leather mud flap. Google velo orange for the url.

There is always duct tape and plastic bags.

youve probably found a solution in the three years since you posted the question, but...

if youre worried more about function than fashion, you could trim the fenders off just behind the brakes. that way, from the fork back, theres fender to keep the water from flying back toward you, and from the fork forward there isnt and fender to interfere with the brakes. my rationale is most of the water should be shed on the back half of the tire, and there shouldnt be too much water coming off the top where theres no fender.

My experience commuting in traffic has been that road splash from passing cars far outweighs the amount of water generated by my tires. The best solution is water resistant pants and shoe covers and a change into totally dry clothes.
